Shortly after its rather respectful and pious opening, Mendelssohn's 'Reformation' Symphony suddenly explodes into a democratic declaration of faith and equality � two ideals the composer held so dear, and it shows.

For the first time we’re holding an all-new launch event to introduce the whole of our next classical season (2012/13) in one go. You’ll hear from both Music Director, Thomas Zehetmair and General Director of The Sage Gateshead, Anthony Sargent. The launch will take place in the usual pre-concert talk slot at 6.30pm and will be free to ticket holders for the concert.

This will be just before the last concert this season by our Music Director Thomas Zehetmair. It’s a characteristic Thomas programme, partnering Mendelssohn and Bruckner with the Australian composer (and former Berlin Philharmonic musician) Brett Dean:

Mendelssohn Symphony no.5 in D �Reformation�

Bruckner Requiem in D minor

Anton Bruckner wanted similar sincerity from his Requiem, and cast it in the same grave D minor key as Mozart�s, creating an austere and deeply moving setting of an immortal text.

A Cappella Stellas – Working together in a friendly and enjoyable atmosphere, singing a wide variety of musical styles, the A Cappella Stellas offers the opportunity to develop vocal skills and harmony singing. All singing is in a group setting.

Griot is a West African term, meaning poet or storyteller � similar to the work of today�s MCs, many of whom will be part of this event either as performers or attendees.

As well as performances from* Genesis Elijah* ,one of the most sought after hip-hop artists of 2012 and named as the �next hype� by BBC Radio 1�s Zane Lowe, the event will showcase the rising artists from the urban music scene including* Shaz, Kay, Audio Outlawz, Subnote, The Prophecy, Syke, Kayz and The Griots*.

There will be workshops led by CoMusica�s project musicians; The Sage Gateshead�s Artist in Residence Toby Heaps; and Bad Taste Cru, the professional BBoy Cru / Dance Company based out of Dance City. Genesis Elijah will also be leading on a writing workshop. These workshops will take place both inside The Sage Gateshead and in the Arches spaces behind the building where a lot of existing aerosol art and music workshops take place on a regular basis, led by CoMusica and Toby Heaps.

There will be information stands for young people to learn more about the opportunities available � not only on the music scene but across a whole range of subjects.

Following on from CoMusica�s Earth Brake Griot event the Ghetto Method street art collective join forces with the CoMusica team and Bad Taste Cru to continue the party at Sanctuary Artspace as part of The Late Shows.

Set to take the world of opera and song by storm, they have been specially chosen by Samling to take part in one of its prestigious Masterclass Weeks.

The Late Shows: New Rise of the Troubadours

Up and coming North East singer/songwriters pay tribute to the legendary Troubadour venue in LA. Various artists will perform their versions of songs featured at the venue from artists of 60’s and 70’s whose careers were spring-boarded by The Troubadour, as well as new and original compositions reflective of the style.

There are three separate performances featuring different artists at 11.10pm, 11.50pm and 12.30am.

Massed Brass Bands

We continue our successful series of thrilling Massed Brass Band Concerts with the united bands of Reg Vardy, Westoe and Durham Miners once again under the musical direction of Ray Farr. Ninety top brass and percussion players will be on stage performing a programme of popular brass classics, virtuoso showpieces and entertaining features and requested show pieces including ’633 Squadron’ and ‘The Battle of Waterloo’. There will also be tributes to the late, great Roy Newsome.

Champion Conductor, Erik Kolk, will direct the massed bands in some special European flavoured works and Maestro Ray Farr will wave his magic baton and introduce the programmes.

1pm: Rosie Lindsay

Rosie Lindsay is a traditional piano player from Wigtownshire in Dumfries and Galloway. In her recital she will be playing a variety of traditional music from all over Scotland and Ireland, and concentrating particularly on her home area of Dumfries and Galloway.

2pm: Colin Nicolson

Colin Nicholson hails from Orkney and began learning the piano accordion at the age of nine. He now focuses his playing on modern Scottish and Irish styles with influences from jazz; always firmly rooted in his tradition.

3pm: Matt Quinn

Matt Quinn is a young melodeon player from Portslade, Sussex. He sings and plays traditional and contemporary music from the British Isles and occasionally from further afield.

4pm Scott Hartley

Hailing from the heart of the Lake District, Scott Hartley is a fiddle player who is equally at home playing a Lakeland hornpipe or for an American Old-Time Barn dance. This recital will explore the tonal aspects of the fiddle and will feature repertoire from both side of the Atlantic ocean, from there and back again.

Lois Nicol is a fiddle player from the Shetland Isles. A previous winner of Shetland’s ‘Young Fiddler of the Year’, she will also be performing a mix of material from neighbouring Scandinavian countries and beyond.

2pm: Bernard Wright

Bernard Wright is a fiddle player from Nottinghamshire, inspired by the distinct fiddling tradition of Cape Breton, Nova Scotia. Expect blasts of strathspeys, jigs and reels contrasted by gentle airs and a few surprises.

3pm: Nathan Armstrong

Nathan Armstrong from Shilbottle, Northumberland performs his Accordion recital focusing on the traditional music of Northumberland.

Darren Milligan is a bagpiper from County Tyrone in Northern Ireland, an area that is steeped strongly in Scots-Irish culture . Darren explores the close knitted relationship between Ireland and Scotland and the connection the bagpipe has with the two lands.

Borders-born singer Kirsty Law, as well as singing much traditional Scottish material, writes her own compositions. She has a strong interest in traditional ballads and the poetic nature of songwriting.

Andy Watt, originally from Callander in Central Scotland, is a guitarist with a keen interest in a wide variety of music. His recital will feature elements of Traditional & Folk music, Jazz, and a few tunes from further afield.

Virtuoso trombonist Dennis Rollins has played at the forefront of UK jazz, funk and pop for 25 years, performing with such stars as Maceo Parker, Courtney Pine and The Brand New Heavies. An award-winning leader in his own right, his latest project is the Velocity Trio – a brilliant marriage of refined contemporary jazz arrangements with simmering funk grooves. This unique trombone/Hammond organ/drums line-up honours the jazz tradition while pushing it forward at the same time.

Velocity Trio also includes Hammond organ virtuoso Ross Stanley and fiery drummer Pedro Segundo, and they make their debut on ‘The 11th Gate’, recorded for visionary US label Mot�ma. The 11 tracks that make up the album are inspired by the widely publicised 11-11-11 Phenomenon, a date attributed by some as ushering in an age of global awareness. It’s clear that this is one of Rollins’ strongest musical statements yet, all embracing in approach but crystallised into a multi-faceted whole that far outweighs the sum of its parts.

Alan Hull was the wryly observant Geordie poet, songwriter and musician who led the 1970’s North East super-group Lindisfarne. Lindisfarne’s breakthrough album ‘Fog on the Tyne’ hit number 1 in the album charts in 1972. 40 years on from this seminal moment in pop history and following Hull’s death in 1995, we take a look back at Hull’s legacy and also look forward with a chance to see three of the most exciting emerging North East singer-songwriters who have been supported by ‘The Alan Hull Award’ a fund he bequeathed after his death, over the past three years.

Ajimal
Holder of the Alan Hull Award in 2011, Ajimal is the solo project for Newcastle’s Fran O’Hanlon. Jumping between serene piano, delicate acoustic, reverb guitars, loop pedals, singing bowls and saws, with the constant of expressive and beautiful vocal melodies and lyrics, Ajimal specialises in grandiose haunted pop.

Cattle & Cane
Curent holders of the Alan Hull Award grizzled stalwarts of the North East’s musical fraternity are touting family band Cattle & Cane as the best young band for many a moon. Their music has a timeless quality that could have as easily emerged from pre-war American as post-millenium Teesside and feature brother and sister Helen and Joe Hammill’s perfect soaring harmonies.

Johnny Kearney
Holder of the Alan Hull Award in 2010 and often performing with Lucy Farrell, Johnny has emerged as a great lyricist, with his bittersweet kitchen-sink dramas showing sympathy with American storytellers like Dylan and Tom Waits.

Horizontal Sunday is a diverse and exciting blend of folk musicians from the Isle of Skye, Dundee and Lincoln, playing Melodeon, Fiddle and Cl�rsach. The combination of differing regional musical influences results in their distinctive style and refreshing take on a wide variety of traditional and self-penned folk music from the British Isles and beyond.

In the years since her tragic early death, folk icon Sandy Denny has emerged as one of the UK ‘s greatest singer-songwriters. Her legendary song ‘Who Knows Where the Time Goes’ has been recorded by a diverse range of artists including Cat Power, Nina Simone and Judy Collins.

This special show celebrates her legacy for a new generation, who are beginning to understand her contribution and significance, as new artists such as Laura Marling, Joanna Newsom and Florence Welch are likened to Denny or cite her as an influence.

Denny is recognized for her pivotal involvement with the British folk rock movement, a sound she was instrumental in creating. She has the distinction of being the only guest vocalist on a Led Zeppelin album, performing the duet �The Battle of Evermore� with Robert Plant on Led Zeppelin IV.

In a short 13 year career Sandy Denny left behind an extensive legacy that has seen her reputation continue to grow. All her recordings have now been comprehensively reissued culminating in a 19cd boxset and an acclaimed album of new songs discovered in her archive and completed by Thea Gilmore entitled �Don�t Stop Singing�.

For the first time Sandy Denny�s entire musical legacy is showcased live bringing together her work with Fairport Convention, Fotheringay, her solo career and the new songs completed by Thea Gilmore. Thea joins a unique line up of artists including former colleagues and friends Maddy Prior, Dave Swarbrick, and Jerry Donahue, alongside Joan Wasser (Joan As Police Woman), PP Arnold and young admirers including Lavinia Blackwall, Sam Carter, Ben Nicholls, Blair Dunlop and other guests. Twenty five years after releasing his last record, Grammy Award-winning Duane Eddy has returned to reclaim what is rightfully his.

With singles like ‘Forty Miles Of Bad Road’, ‘Shazam’, ‘Some Kind-A Earth Quake’, ‘Yep!’, ‘Cannonball’ and ‘Ramrod’ Duane Eddy kept rock �n� roll�s unruly spirit alive in the late 50s and early 60s. An uproarious cover of Henry Mancini�s Peter Gunn theme in �59 provided Eddy with one of his most lasting tunes, with the track being resurrected in 1986 when he re-recorded it with the Art Of Noise and scored a hit with it for a second time.

Duane�s playing was not confined to rambunctious floor-fillers. While his first three albums ‘Have Twangy Guitar Will Travel’, ‘Especially For You’ and ‘The Twang�s The Thang’ collected his increasing number of hits, his fourth album, 1960�s ‘Songs Of Our Heritage’, offered something entirely different. For a start it was an acoustic affair. Secondly, it saw the man delve back into American music and cover classic tunes like ‘John Henry’, ‘The Streets Of Laredo’ and ‘On Top Of Ol� Smokey’. Moreover, it showcased Eddy�s dexterity in a different kind of way. So too did the lush orchestration of 1960�s ‘Because They�re Young’ � a track which accompanied the movie of the same name and in which Duane also starred. As his biggest hit (Number Four in the US, Number Two in the UK), it also saw Eddy depose Elvis Presley in NME�s end of year reader�s poll when Duane was voted The World�s Number One Musical Personality.

Produced by Richard Hawley and Colin Elliot, Duane�s new album ‘Road Trip’ showcases everything that is unique about his guitar playing. When it rocks, it rocks hard but above all it is an album that is defined by the man�s elegant playing and the space within its sound.

Sarah Jarosz emerged on the acoustic music scene as a mandolin wunderkind in her young teens. Jamming onstage with bluegrass icons David Grisman and Ricky Skaggs, she played with a sure touch and real joy that belied her years. She quickly picked up the guitar and banjo. While her instrumental talents are formidable, Sarah is an equally gifted vocalist and songwriter.

Sarah’s debut album ‘Song Up In Her Head’ received critical acclaim “An un-retouched gem“ New York Times. The album featured Sarah’s wise-beyond-her-years songwriting and velvety smooth, powerful vocals which have elicited parallels to Gillian Welch (Rolling Stone). Sarah’s original instrumental ‘Mansinneedof’ was nominated for a Grammy in the Country Instrumental Performance category in 2010. She is also won a trio of Austin Music Awards.

Accompanying herself on octave mandolin, mandolin, guitar, and banjo, and sometimes joined by a duo of equally talented young musicians, Sarah’s live performances feature a mix of new old-timey ballads and innovative covers.

Pioneering American singer/songwriter returns with her gentle, yet powerful acoustic pop. With songs such as ‘Marlene on the Wall’, the Grammy nominated/ MTV award winning ‘Luka’, and the hugely successful album ‘Solitude Standing’, she came to be regarded as the vanguard of a new generation of female singer/ songwriters.

Her career received an extra boost in the early 90’s when UK-based dance duo DNA released a remix of a cappella song ‘Tom’s Diner’, which charted worldwide.
Her music has inspired a generation of female singer/songwriters such as KT Tunstell, Tracey Chapman, and Alanis Morrisette.

In 2010 and 2011, Suzanne released an exclusive collection, consisting of three �best of� albums- �Close-Up�, with the most recent- Volume 3 �States of Being�, released in the summer of 2011. A celebration of the musical influence of Kurt Schwitters curated by artist Helen Petts during her exhibition at the Hatton Gallery, home of Schwitters’ Merzbarn Wall. Leading international free improvisers explore sound in the spirit of Merz � with found objects and text, electronics, sampling, extended vocal technique… and a bicycle wheel. Featuring the hilarious Bohman Brothers with pianist Steve Beresford, maniacal and brilliant singer Phil Minton and percussionist Roger Turner, Berlin-based vocal artist and sound poet Ute Wassermann and Hardanger fiddle and bicycle-wheel virtuoso Sylvia Hallett.

Presented by Jazz North East and the Hatton Gallery. Commissioned by the Unlimited programme, part of the London 2012 Cultural Olympiad.

Produced by The Sage Gateshead in association with the Royal Shakespeare Company�s (RSC) Open Stages, Bernstein’s classic musical ‘West Side Story’ will run from 4th-7th July 2012 as part of the World Shakespeare Festival.

A stunning, full-scale production with bold new choreography by Will Tuckett, the cast will feature ambitious, talented young people and amateur theatre-makers recruited through open auditions alongside early stage professionals.

Northern Sinfonia, orchestra of The Sage Gateshead, will be conducted by Gateshead-born and critically acclaimed conductor John Wilson. The production will be directed and choreographed by award-winning choreographer and dancer Will Tuckett.

The Bard of Salford, whose poems have provided the opening soundtrack for some of the biggest bands in the world will be weaving his lyrical magic in this performance. John Cooper Clarke shot to prominence in the 1970s as the original punk poet whose sparse, rapid-fire prose defined the experiences of the working classes on the streets of the UK�s big cities and he became known as one of the leading voices of youth culture.

In his early years John made his name performing to small crowds in the pubs and clubs of Manchester before appearing on the same bill as bands such as The Sex Pistols, Joy Division and Elvis Costello.

The vitality of John�s work has seen its inclusion in a variety of different media. Bands such as Arctic Monkeys and Reverend and the Makers cite him as a major influence on their work and his poem Evidently Chickentown featured in an episode of US TV gangster drama The Sopranos.

The idea that technology will begin to replace the book, rather than enhance it, dominates current thinking about the future of literature in the digital age. In this newly commissioned performance artist Stevie Ronnie and musicians from The Sage Gateshead produce a unique performance inspired by Brass Book, a new commission that seeks to reverse this way of thinking with traditionally crafted books that have been embedded with cutting edge technologies.

Performed as part of Brass: Durham International Festival 2012, Brass Book was commissioned by Durham City Arts with support from Durham County Council, Arts Council England and Culture Lab.

Northern Sinfonia Summer Chamber Series

This season’s summer chamber music from Northern Sinfonia focuses on the Piano Quartets and Quintets of Brahms and Schumann. Both master pianists, it is no surprise that these two Romantic greats should produce chamber music with piano of such quality. Alongside these masterpieces will be works from three other 19th Century composers as well as two entries for Piano and Wind by Mozart and Beethoven.

Tonight’s concert starts with Robert Schumann, in his ‘year of chamber music’ ( in 1942 a he produced 3 string quartets and his Piano Quartet, which will be performed at the next concert). Here, Northern Sinfonia present his Piano Quintet in E-flat major, one of few Piano Quintets successful enough to find a home in the repertory.

Brahms’s first Piano Quartet, written almost 20 years after Schumann’s, was the first chamber work that Brahms played in public himself.

To complete this programme we move to Italy and the music of Double Bass virtuoso Domenico Dragonetti.

Mozart’s Quintet for Piano and Wind came at one of his happiest and most prolific times, which saw the composer completing fifteen piano concertos and four horn concertos in four years. Like Brahms and Schumann, Mozart was a celebrated pianist and performed the work himself.

The concert also features Tchaikovsky’s final chamber work, written on an excursion to Italy, his Souvenir de Florence.

Completing this programme is Schumann’s Piano Quartet in E-flat written in his ‘Year of Chamber Music’ (1842). Started just days after completing his Piano Quintet, the Quartet is markedly different – following a more traditional use of counterpoint.

Having just released the critically lauded album �Locked Down� (produced by The Black Keys� Dan Auerbach) iconic musician and Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Dr John (Mac Rebennack), is set to headline this year�s SummerTyne Americana Festival

Auerbach, a long-time fan of the five-time Grammy winner dubbed �the Night Tripper�, visited Dr. John late in 2010 in his hometown of New Orleans, announcing his ambition to produce �the best record you�ve made in a long time.� Rebennack replied that he had done his research�his children had told him good things about The Black Keys. That conversation and subsequent collaboration at the 2011 Bonnaroo Festival, led to September recording sessions in Nashville where �Locked Down� was mixed by Auerbach and completed in early 2012.

Dr John is universally celebrated as the living embodiment of the rich musical heritage exclusive to New Orleans. His very colourful musical career began in the 1950s when he wrote and played guitar on some of the greatest records to come out of the Crescent City.

Several of his many career highlights include 1973�s �In The Right Place�, which contained the chart hits �Right Place Wrong Time� and �Such A Night.� Dr. John garnered Grammy award wins in 1989, 1992, 1996 and 2000. He has also received six other nominations over the years. Most recently, he was nominated for a 2007 Grammy for �Sippiana Hericane,� his Hurricane Katrina benefit disc.

The final concert in our Summer Chamber Music Series culminates with Brahms’ Piano Quintet in F minor, written in the same year as his Piano Quartet. The youthful Brahms was influenced by both Joseph Joachim and Clara Schumann although he wasn’t altogether happy with their input so dedicated the work to Princess Anna of Hesse.

Beethoven’s Quintet for Piano and Wind was a clear reflection on Mozart’s similar work and the programme is completed Joachim Raff’s Sextet for Strings.

Our Folkworks Adult Summer School is a wonderful way to spend a week of your well earned summer break. The week is packed full of music, be it in your main instrument, ensemble, sessions, or ‘options’. The modular timetable of Adult Summer School allows you to alter the intensity of the week for your own needs but, taking everything in, there are over 42 hours of music making during the week!

The accommodation is in single rooms with both standard and en-suite available; there are also a small number of twin rooms. It’s a fantastic environment to learn a wealth of new repertoire, improve your technique and musicality, and make some fantastic friends in the process.

There is a tutor concert, a ceilidh, an ‘Over to You’ evening, a BBQ, and even a farewell party. We believe that our school is both excellent value for money and outstanding quality, we’d love you to join us and see for yourself.

Junior Summer School
The Junior Summer School runs Wednesday – Saturday and is full of music, fun, singing, dancing, and friendship. The only requirements to Junior Summer School are that you are aged 9-13, have a basic grasp of your acoustic instrument (including singing), and are willing to learn and have lots of fun. The summer school accommodation is in twin rooms where you will be paired with someone of a similar age. At night time there are concerts, ceilidhs, hot chocolates and more. Pupils are looked after at all times by a dedicated pastoral team who are on hand 24 hours a day.

It was the most perfect week of my entire life, and continues to get better every year. To be totally immersed in the music which I love, with the people who I love for an entire week is a privilege which few have had. It is the only event which is permanently set on my calendar. Suffix: Part of the ~Flow creative programme commissioned by Arts Council England

This major new commission by the world’s greatest sound recordist creates an acoustic journey down the River Tyne from its sources to the sea. Going With The Flow is a unique soundscape, a seasonal time compression consisting entirely of location recordings gathered and composed between February and August 2012. Taking inspiration from the actions and rhythms of the river, the recordings will track the course of the flow and the voices from the backsides between which it passes, following the sonic metamorphosis of upland rainfall to tidal seawater. Presented with visuals by Andy Greenwood

Part of the ~Flow creative programme. ~Flow is a floating musical public artwork, moored on the north bank of the Tyne by the Gateshead Millennium Bridge. Commissioned by Arts Council England, it is part of the Cultural Olympiad in the North East, celebrating the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Plainsong are a country rock/folk rock band, formed in early 1972 by Iain Matthews and Andy Roberts. The original group split up before the end of 1972, in that time they recorded the much-loved album ‘In Search Of Amelia Earhart’, and a second record, ‘Now We Are 3’, which was consigned to the vaults until its delayed release in 2005.

After meeting by chance in 1990 Matthews and Roberts worked as a duo for a couple of years, and then in 1992 they decided to rebuild Plainsong to recapture the vocal and instrumental ideal of the original band. Over the next 11 years they recorded, toured extensively and built a strong following amongst discerning lovers of acoustic music.

2003 saw the release of the album ‘Pangolins’. They also recorded a set of 19 songs in Holland, played live in front of an invited audience. This thoroughly honest performance, just four great voices, a whole range of superb songs in wide-ranging styles, and a fitting reminder of Plainsong at its height. As a tribute to the 40 years since the original line-up, Iain, Andy, Julian and Griff are to make a farewell tour in 2012, and to release that 19 track live album, now called ‘Fat Lady Singing’. Weaving throughout all the songs are those unmistakable Plainsong vocal harmonies, Julian’s evocative harmonica, Griff’s searing fretless bass, Andy’s Appalachian dulcimer and bouzouki, all in support of Iain’s soaring voice.

Saxophonist and composer Trish Clowes performs music from her second album for Basho Records, featuring Gwilym Simcock, her quartet – with Chris Montague, Calum Gourlay and James Maddren – and improvising string quartet led by Thomas Gould.

Since her debut album ‘Tangent’, Clowes has won accolades for her music’s integrity, luminousity and ambition, and her saxophone sound has been compared to Stan Getz, Charles Lloyd and Iain Ballamy. She has enjoyed live radio broadcasts, jazz festival appearances and a PRS for Music Foundation award for her own festival Emulsion. Sedaka found stardom after Connie Francis recorded his �Stupid Cupid� and �Where the Boys Are�. Sedaka soon recorded chart toppers �The Diary�, �Oh! Carol�, �Stairway to Heaven�. �Calendar Girl�, �Little Devil�, �Happy Birthday Sweet Sixteen�, �Next Door To An Angel� and �Breaking Up Is Hard To Do�. Neil also wrote hit songs for many top artists including Frank Sinatra (�The Hungry Years�), Elvis Presley (�Solitaire�), Tom Jones (�Puppet Man�), The Monkees (�When Love Comes Knocking At Your Door�), and The Fifth Dimension (��Workin� on a Groovy Thing�).

Sedaka has been inducted into the Songwriter’s Hall of Fame, has had a street named after him in his hometown of Brooklyn, and was given a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

More recently Neil has returned to his classical roots, composing his first symphonic piece �Joie De Vivre�, and his first piano concerto �Manhattan Intermezzo�. In October 2010, Neil recorded these two pieces with the London Philharmonic at the famed Air Studios in London. His varied career – he studied at Juillard, and was a Brill building songwriting master in the sixties before his seventies crooner fame – makes interesting reading.

Familiar to many thousands of music fans as the front man in the Scottish rock band Idlewild, Roddy Woomble is also a celebrated solo songwriter and performer. He follows up the release of his acclaimed 2006 solo debut ‘My Secret is My Silence’ with a brand new album of new songs.

A native of Irvine – small-town Scotland writ large – Roddy Woomble co-founded Idlewild in 1995, naming the band for the quiet haven featured in his then-favourite book, ‘Anne of Green Gables’.

Given that the NME likened their early punk-fuelled sound – deftly revisited on their latest album, 2007’s ‘Make Another World’ – to “a flight of stairs falling down a flight of stairs“, the quiet haven part was initially somewhat ironic, but gradually came closer as Idlewild meanwhile progressed through sweeping melodic rock to rootsy, melodic sparseness.

Extending that softer lyrical vein of Roddy’s songwriting, 2006 saw his first solo release, ‘My Secret Is My Silence’, winning rave reviews across both the rock and folk press.

He was also a key instigator behind the acclaimed 2007 album ‘Ballads of the Book’, bringing together leading Scottish poets and musicians to collaborate on new songs.

Roddy went on to record and release the album ‘Before the Ruin’ with Kris Drever and John McCusker in 2008, which they toured extensively around the UK to much praise. The new album, �The Impossible Song and Other Songs� was recorded on the isle of Mull. This was released in the spring of 2011 to critical acclaim and Roddy and his band have been touring the UK ever since playing some notable dates including Beautiful Days and Wychwood Festival last summer.

As well as songs from the new album the live set will feature tunes from ‘My Secret is My Silence’, ‘Before the Ruin’ alongside several Idlewild numbers.

North Carolina�based Carolina Chocolate Drops follow up their 2010 debut album and Grammy Award winning ‘Genuine Negro Jig’, which reached number one on the Billboard Bluegrass Chart and number two on the Billboard Heatseekers and Folk Charts with ‘Leaving Eden’ (released 28th February).

Carolina Chocolate Drops formed when they met at a roots festival in 2005, and discovered a shared interest in traditional African-American string band music of the Piedmont region.

Born in Florida to a French mother and a Haitian father, C�cile, now aged just 22, is pursuing musical studies at the Aix-en-Provence Conservatoire. In addition to her studies, she has been drawing rave reviews working and across Europe with various bands, usually under the leadership of her mentor, the great clarinet and sax man Jean-Fran�ois Bonnel.

C�cile won first prize in the prestigious 2010 Thelonious Monk International Vocal Jazz Competition in New York, resulting in a scholarship, a recording contract with the US Concord label and an offer from no less than Wynton Marsalis to sing with the Lincoln Center Jazz Repertory Orchestra.

C�cile is an outstanding interpreter of the material of Billie Holiday, bringing fresh insights into Billie’s 1930s work in particular.

The all-star international band assembled to back C�cile are all steeped in the 1930s jazz idiom, Jean-Fran�ois Bonnel leading pianist Martin Litton, trumpeter Enrico Tomasso, guitarist Roly Veitch, bassist Manu Hagmann and drummer Richard Pite.

During the winter of 2010/2011 they held a raucous eight week residency at The Wilmington Arms in Clerkenwell. Famously advertised as �Live Rehearsals�, the shows were a heady mixture of excitement and catastrophe, at once fabulously warm, surprising and hilarious. They have done something similar this year at Monto Water Rats, where they found that actually, they weren�t half bad�so they�ve booked a few more shows and thought they might even bang a few festival performances out this summer.

Three of the great names of the brass band movement, Black Dyke, Cory and the National Youth Brass Band of Great Britain, provide the ‘curtain-raiser’ for the 36th Annual Brass in Concert Championship with their appearance in the World of Brass Gala Concert.

The Cory and Black Dyke Bands are currently ranked the number one and number two brass bands in the world. Both bands have delighted audiences all over the world and are magnificent ambassadors for the sound of brass, providing thrilling and entertaining programmes to packed houses all year round.

The National Youth Brass Band of Great Britain, celebrating their Diamond Jubilee year, continue to harness the finest young brass players in the land.

The Martin Simpson Trio is a coming together of some of the finest musicians and singers in the UK today.

Martin himself is recognised as one of the best acoustic guitar players in the world, with an unique mixture of British and American music in his repertoire. He has won BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards for ‘Musician of the Year’ and ‘Album of the Year’, twice and also for ‘Best Original Track’ in 2008.

Chris Barber celebrates his 63rd year as a band leader in 2012. With his 10-piece band, featuring a 7-strong front line, Chris plays a selection of his favourite music: from his roots in New Orleans style in �Bourbon Street Parade� (still his signature tune) to the early music of Duke Ellington and Sidney Bechet, Bob Crosby, blues by Sonny Terry & Brownie McGhee … and probably back to �When the Saints�!

The Big Chris Barber Band combine all these ingredients into an evening of exciting, and often moving, Jazz and Blues.

Acker Bilk & His Paramount Jazz Band

Acker Bilk first gained worldwide fame with hit single ‘Stranger On The Shore’ in 1962 – it stayed in the charts for 55 weeks and was the first number 1 hit in UK and USA simultaneously. Since that time Acker and his Paramount Jazz Band have firmly established themselves as one of the most successful (and best loved) British jazz bands of all time.

Acker has received an MBE for his services to the music industry and was awarded at the BBC Jazz Awards for his unique contribution to jazz in the UK. Here he is in a thoughtful mood on TOTP:

Black Dyke Band is the most recorded band in the world with over 350 recordings and growing every year. Loudon Wainwright III is a true one-off. His songs can be heartwarming, hilarious, intensely personal, life-affirming, and sometimes just undefinably ingenious – sometimes all at the same time.

He wrote his first song in 1968, “Edgar”, about a Watch Hill RI lobsterman, and was soon signed to Atlantic by Nesuhi Ertegun. Several years later, he moved to Columbia Records, where 1972’s “Album III” yielded the top 20 hit “Dead Skunk”. His recording career spans a total of 23 albums, including 2009’s Grammy-winning “High Wide & Handsome”, a musical tribute to Charlie Poole (1893-1931), the legendary yet obscure NC singer and banjo player.

Loudon Wainwright songs have been recorded by Johnny Cash, Earl Scruggs, Rufus Wainwright,and Mose Allison, among others. His acting career has encompassed M.A.S.H., a stint on Broadway and more recent work in films directed by Hal Ashby, Tim Burton, Cameron Crowe, Martin Scorsese, Christopher Guest, and Judd Apatow.
