Gateshead International Jazz Festival 2012
Trio Libero: Andy Sheppard, Michel Benita, Sebastian Rochford / Courtney Pine: Europa Double Bill
Trio Libero
Andy Sheppard – saxophones
Michel Benita – double bass
Sebastian Rochford – drums
Leading UK saxophonist Andy Sheppard, French bass virtuoso Michel Benita and extraordinary drummer Sebastian Rochford, have crossed paths many times, but the idea of this trio took shape when they played together in an instrumental celebration of the work of cult French musical genius Serge Gainsbourg.
Andy Sheppard, a successful recording artist, bandleader and composer for film, TV and theatre, Andy Sheppard is a British jazz artist to have made a significant international impact; Michel Benita, steeped in jazz, he also loves folk and country music, which has shaped his latest album ‘Ramblin‘’; Sebastian Rochford is the extraordinary, imaginative and adventurous composer, songwriter, producer and instrumentalist who, with his multi-genre output and the help of some key collaborators, has turned British jazz on its head.

“A masterclass in imparting ambiguity and depth to the smallest sounds – and a remarkable demonstration of how the catchiness of a pop song can be imparted to a tone poem that seems to barely rise above a murmur. Glowing with life.” John Fordham, The Guardian
“The cooly moody tunes seep through your speakers like a series of poetic mists. Performing the graceful trick of being both airy and weight, it’s a wintry treat.” The Metro
