AV Festival 12: Hanne Darboven: Requiem
at St Thomas the Martyr Church, Haymarket, Newcastle upon Tyne
This UK premiere of Darboven’s Requiem is performed by Thomas Dahl, Director of Music at St. Peter’s Church in Hamburg, and selected by the artist for her 60th birthday recital in 2001. Darboven is one of the most important of the conceptual artists. In 1968 she adopted the date as the basis for every future work, as a daily act of writing time.
Requiem is her major composition for organ, based on calculations using dates 1.1.00 to 31.12.99, plus parts of Bach’s Toccata in D minor. It powerfully represents all the days of the 20th century.
